Mask or No Mask: The Tactical Evolution of Payday 3
In “Payday 3,” players can now utilize civilian hostages as protective barriers and “bargain” their release for supplies or a longer break between assaults. This becomes an option once players don their Point Break-inspired masks and turn the volume up. While this didn’t drastically alter my gameplay on a standard level, it might have significant tactical implications on more challenging settings.
Another substantial change in “Payday 3” is the choice of masking up. In stealth mode, players can slip into high-security zones undercover, restricting their actions but reducing the likelihood of detection. Instead of facing an all-out SWAT response, players might just receive a stern reprimand if their teammates remain inconspicuous.
During our recent stealth attempts at the bank, my team strolled to the staff-only door next to the parking area—acting like everyday clients—paused for the guard to turn away, and then discreetly unlocked the door. However, our plans quickly unraveled as I was caught by a guard. While escorting me out, he discovered another team member awkwardly hidden behind a locker door, reminiscent of a child’s attempt at hide and seek, and detained him. As confusion prevailed, our lead decided to mask up and discreetly neutralize the guard. We were still in stealth, technically.
Interestingly, if the situation remains gun-free, getting apprehended can be advantageous. On another instance when I was escorted out, I managed to snatch a security badge from the guard’s belt, granting me future access. After being released into the main bank area, I made my way back to the side entrance without hesitation. The game humorously introduces a dilemma: to uphold an innocent front or to commit with the mask. Once you opt for the mask, there’s no turning back. But the squad has the flexibility to split roles, with some remaining masked and others undercover.
